When SS Rajamouli’s film comes to theatres, others make way. This seems to be the case in Kerala too, with the much-anticipated RRR, starring NTR Jr and Ram Charan, releasing a record number of screens in Kerala and that too in Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam in both 2D and 3D versions.

The big budget period film, which is set in the 1920s, has released in more than 500 screen across the State. The distributors of RRR will also be hoping that the movie takes down several box office records held by Rajamouli’s previous directorial Baahubali 2: The Conclusion in the State.

Baahubali 2 is the only other-language movie to earn Rs 50 crore from the Kerala box office, finishing at Rs 75.8 crore in its lifetime run in the State. The movie also had a stellar opening, raking in close to Rs 7 crore on its opening day, a feat that the film’s distributors and theatre owners would be hoping that RRR also emulate. The Prabhas and Rana Daggubati-starrer also holds the records for the second highest earner in its 4-day run, which closed out at Rs 21 crore; this was only recently broken by Mammootty’s Bheeshma Parvam.

Touted to be made on a budget exceeding Rs 550 crore, RRR tells the story of the freedom fighters Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem, played by Ram Charan and NTR Jr, respectively. The movie also boasts a stellar cast including Alia Bhatt, Ajay Devgn, Samuthirakani, Shriya Saran and Ray Stevenson.

Unlike in other parts of the country where the film was screened from midnight, the shows for RRR in Kerala began at 6am. Several Malayalam films had also opted against releasing the film this week, owing to hype surrounding the Rajamouli directorial.

This clears the path for the film for at least two weeks in the State, if the reviews are positive. From the second week of April, again two other-language films will get more screens than Malayalam films, with Vijay’s Beast and Yash’s KGF: Chapter 2 set to release on April 13 and 14, respectively.
