Ramya has okayed, in principle, a story pitched by choreographer-filmmaker Brinda Gopal and cinematographer Preetha Jayaraman, but it requires more work before she can make an announcement

Ever since Kannada actress Ramya left cinema to pursue active politics, her fans have relentlessly pursued her wondering when she’d make a comeback. After a few years away, she did say she was ready to face cameras again, but the two projects that she initially thought would be it, didn’t turn out to be her return films. First there was her home production Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye; a role that she gave to Siri Ravikumar, and then there was Uttarakaanda, which she now says she decided against because of the lengthy commitment involved, as it has a sequel.

Every time the question of a comeback came up, Ramya always had the same answer – that she was not looking at doing the same stuff she did 2 decades ago and wanted something different. Unfortunately, most of the scripts that came to her were just that, and she isn’t ready to be just another prop in a film again. But it looks like Ramya’s finally found what she’s been looking for.
During a panel discussion about Women in Cinema at the ongoing Bengaluru International Film Festival, Ramya reiterated the absolute lack of quality roles for women and cited Malayalam films as an example that Kannada movies could learn from in terms of writing characters across genders. “Except the story that Preetha (Jayaraman) and Brinda (Gopal) came to me with – a sports-based subject – everybody else is still doing the same thing that I did 20 years ago. I don’t want to just do a few scenes, comedy and songs anymore,” said Ramya.
On the sidelines of the panel discussion, Ramya then said that the story that she’s okayed in principle is still a work in progress and that when the time is right, she will make a formal announcement. In recent times, Ramya has been vocal about the need for narratives to move away from focusing only on the hero and machoism .
Meanwhile, reports also suggest that Ramya will collaborate with director Yogaraj Bhat on his next directorial, that will kick off after the release of Manada Kadalu.
