Ranbir Kapoor’s upcoming film Brahmastra found its place as one of the most highly anticipated films of the year. Fans as well as the entire film fraternity are anxiously awaiting whether the film will manage to cut through the ‘slump’ that is plaguing Bollywood of late, where recent films have failed to make their mark on the box office. And now it seems that the fate of Vicky Kaushal's The Immortal Ashwatthama, also depends on the success of Brahmastra.

For the uninitiated, The Immortal Ashwatthama had been put on the backburner by the makers last year due to budget issues. According to a report in Mid Day, the makers were waiting to see how Brahmastra fares at the box office before going ahead and taking concrete decisions about the Vicky Kaushal starrer. The makers of the latter reportedly wanted to tread with caution due to the box office slump going through Bollywood at the moment.

A source told the portal that the makers were trying to gauge the audiences’ interest in Brahmastra, since both films were in similar ‘zones’, dealing with stories of Indian mythology. “That’s why Ashwatthama producer Ronnie Screwvala is keen to see how the Ranbir and Alia Bhatt starrer fares before sealing his film’s budget’, the source added.

The source went on to say that if Brahmastra managed to earn Rs 150-200 crore, then the makers of The Immortal Ashwatthama would have no qualms in scaling up the film to Rs 300 crore. The latter also had the advantage of time as the film was in pre-production at the moment and was aiming for a release in 2025. The makers were hopeful that the market would improve by that time as well.

The report also stated that the film’s producer Ronnie Screwvala had asked director Aditya Dhar to rework the film’s budget to be Rs 200 crores or less, speaking of the difficulties to recover costs in pre-COVID times.
