Trouble has been brewing for the upcoming Ranveer Singh-starrer since its announcement by director Shankar. Aascar Ravichandran, who bankrolled the 2005 blockbuster Anniyan starring Vikram, claims to own the copyrights of the movie and is moving his case to High Court to refrain the director and producer of the Hindi remake, Jayantilal Gada from making the upcoming thriller movie.
Aascar Ravichandran had initially filed a complaint with the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC) and is moving his case to HC with the body’s backing as claimed by the producer.
According to an ETimes report, he says that Shankar and Jayantilal Gada are not allowed to helm the Hindi remake without his consent, as the story and the copyrights of the movie belong to him and not the director. Ravichandran also claims that Shankar had taken on the movie’s direction on his saying.
Shankar denied these claims, saying that everyone was aware that the original script belongs to him. Ravichandran mentioned that he was shocked to find out about his own movie’s Hindi remake on social media in April 2021, when Shankar and Jayantilal Gada made the announcement. Ravichandran said, “It must be the first time that something like this has happened in our cinema.”
Ravichandran informed that he will be moving the case to Chennai High Court but is asked to wait a little longer by SIFCC as they have had a conversation with the film association in Mumbai. He also said, “It is not Shankar who is the producer of the film but Gadaji with whom I need to have a discussion about the project.”
Anniyan, which came out in 2006, was a commercial success. The movie was later dubbed in Hindi and was titled Aparichit.
