Challenging Star Darshan’s first film under Tharun Kishore Sudhir’s direction, Roberrt, which was delayed by a year owing to the global pandemic, eventually came to theatres in April 2023. The film, an action thriller that also starred Vinod Prabhakar, P Ravi Shankar, Jagapathi Babu, Ravi Kishan, Devaraj, among others, was said to be a box office success, although, it was said that there were discrepancies in the officially announced figures. The reviews, though, were largely positive.
Roberrt marked the Kannada film debut of Miss Supranational 2014, Asha Bhat. She was Darshan’s romantic interest and was the highlight of songs like Kannu Hodiyaka and Baby Dance Floor Ready. Darshan's character had two distinctive arcs - as Raghava, a cook in Uttar Pradesh and as Roberrt, a man with a violent past. The film is now coming back to theatres, with a re-release on June 7, a day on which no major Kannada films are coming out.
Roberrt, which has music by Arjun Janya, also stars Sonal Monteiro, Chikkanna, Avinash, Shivaraj KR Pete, Tejaswini. Chandu B Gowda, Suchendra Prasad, Dharmanna Kadur, Dileep Shetty, Aishwarya Prasad, Kari Subbu, among others.
Following Roberrt, Darshan and Tharun announced that they would be collaborating on a historical, with the filmmaker working on a script about the life and times of freedom fighter Sindhura Lakshmana. However, that project was put on the backburner and instead they did a commercial film with a twist. Darshan, who had a debacle with Kranti, needed a hit and he got that with Kaatera, a period film that explored the land reform act and casteism.
