It’s the season of re-releases in Kannada cinema. Only days after two of the late Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar’s films – Anjaniputra and Power*** - came to theatres, it is the turn of Real Star Upendra to try and daw audiences to movie halls. On May 17, the actor-filmmaker’s directorial A, which marked his acting debut, will be in theatres. His realistic portrayal of the subject of the film is what earned Upendra the moniker, Real Star.

Cult movie - A

A, which came out in 1998 is considered a cult movie, for experimenting with reverse screenplay that also included flashbacks within a flashback. The romantic psychological thriller that paired Upendra with Chandni, is essentially a love story between a filmmaker and an actress. However, it also explored the dark underbelly of the film industry – casting couch.

When it released in theatres, the lead pair’s performance, Gurukiran’s background score, cinematography and reverse screenplay received much praise. Upendra’s narrative, though, was confusing too, as it as non-linear, owing to which several audiences watched it multiple times to understand the story. The film was a major box office success and stars Archana, Marina, Kote Prabhakar, Biradar, Malathi, Suchitra, Saroja Srisailan, Michael Madhu, Gurukiran, Roopa Iyer, among others. The film was dubbed in Telugu and was a big success there too.

Upendra is currently busy with his new directorial, UI, which comes nearly a decade after his last, Uppi 2. The actor has been tightlipped about the content he’s set to present this around, even going to the extent of presenting a teaser with no visuals to keep the suspense going. The film also stars Reeshma Nanaiah.

A is available to stream on YouTube, but if you’d rather watch it on the big screen, you can watch it on May 17. Most of the actor’s other directorials, like Om, Super, Uppi 2, are available on Sun NXT. You can access these films and more when you subscribe to OTTplay Premium’s Simply South pack.
