Director Guru Ramanujam's Red Sandalwood, which stars Vetri in the lead, is all set to drop on Aha Tamil. The film will have its digital premiere on October 20. Aha Tamil shared the announcement on its social media handle, with the caption, "Awakening an unknown world for LOVE #RedSandalWood premieres on October 20th on aha! Don't miss watching it (sic)."

Plot of Red Sandalwood

The plot of Red Sandalwood revolves around sandalwood smuggling and how poor and vulnerable people are trafficked for the task. The star cast includes Garuda Ram, MS Bhaskar, Ganesh Venkatram, Diya Mayuri, Vishwanth, Ramachandra Raju, G Marimuthu, Vinod Sagar to name a few.

Based on a real-life incident

Talking to OTTplay earlier, Ganesh Venkatram, who plays a crucial role in the film, had stated, "The film is inspired by a real-life incident in Andhra Pradesh. It is an expose of a crime syndicate dealing with red sandalwood which also involved the murder of workers involved in the task." Majority of the portions were canned in Talakona and Renigunta in Andhra Pradesh, and in Chennai and Dharmapuri.

Film undergoes title change

The film was initially titled Red Sandal, but was later changed to Red Sandalwood. Music for the film is by Sam CS, cinematography by Suresh Bala and editing by Richard Kevin. Red Sandalwood, bankrolled by JN Cinemas, hit screens on September 8.

Though Vetri's performance in the film came in for praise, the film opened to mixed reviews at the box office. Many appreciated the idea, but called the execution below average. Vetri shot to fame with 8 Thottakkal (2017). He later worked in films like Jiivi, Jiivi 2 and Memories to name a few.

Pushpa, too, revolves around red sandalwood smuggling

It is to be noted that Allu Arun's much-hyped pan-Indian project, Pushpa: The Rise also revolves around the smuggling of red sandalwood. The second part of the film, which also stars Fahadh Faasil and Rashmika Mandanna, will hit screens for Independence Day next year. Also expected to hit screens on the same day are Indian 2 and Singham 3.
