Regina Hall to star and produce Midnight Run sequel with original cast member Robert De Niro

Regina Hall will star and produce the sequel to 1988 film Midnight Run alongside the film's original star Robert De Niro. 

The screenplay of the sequel backed by Universal, is written by Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Aeysha Carr. According to The Hollywood Reporter, details of the plot are still under wraps.

In the original action comedy De Niro played a bounty hunter Jack Walsh who is tasked with the responsiblity to capture accountant Jonathan "The Duke" Mardukas (Charles Grodin), who has embezzled money from a mob boss. 

For his performance in the film, De Niro bagged a Best Actor nomination at the Golden Globe awards. Midnight Run currently holds a 94 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 

THR adds that there have been attempts to make a sequel to the film before with Timothy Dowling attached as writer. The second instalment intended to have De Niro's character paired with someone younger. 

Midnight Run 2 will be produced by De Niro and Jane Rosenthal (via Tribeca), and Berry Walsh will executive produce. Jesse Collins is producing through Jesse Collins Entertainment, and Hall under her RH Negative label. Sara Scott will represent Universal.

Hall was last seen in Hulu's Nine Perfect Strangers. Her other upcoming projects include Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul with This is Us actor Sterling K Brown, and a Netflix comedy Me Time with Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg.
