Asif Ali’s Rekhachithram, also starring Anaswara Rajan, is an intriguing Malayalam film that probes a murder mystery, even while beautifully capturing the allure of cinema. The Malayalam mystery thriller follows CI Vivek (Asif Ali), who stumbles upon a skeleton that puts him on the quest to find out what happened to Rekha, a young aspiring actress. So, was Asif Ali’s cop Vivek able to capture the killer of Rekha (Anaswara Rajan)? Read Rekhachithram ending explained to find out and of course, major spoilers ahead!
Right before he kills himself, Rajendran tells the world that he and his friends had buried a young girl in the woods. This sets off CI Vivek, who literally digs up a skeleton on the very day he rejoins duty after suspension, on a quest to find this nameless victim. The plot takes us back to a film set from 1985, Mammootty-starrer Kathodu Kathoram, where Rekha, a young aspiring actress, was last spotted. But who killed Rekha?
As the police dig deeper into what happened to Rekha 40 years ago, the police call in the wealthy Vincent (Manoj K. Jayan) for questioning as his name was mentioned by Rajendran. But they are unable to get any leads and Vivek continues to follow other evidence and puts together the missing pieces of the puzzle. He finds out that Rekha had befriended a sister at a convent near the film set and spent the night there. But she went missing the next day, so did the cash and jewellery from the convent.
This leads to the assumption that Rekha fled after stealing the money and jewellery, but Vivek once again identifies another person from the past, Francis Thadathil (Sai Kumar), who reveals the real incident. He recounts that another young woman, named Pushpam, worked at the convent where Rekha stayed the night. She and her boyfriend Vakkachan plot to flee with the money and put the blame on Rekha. And it is Pushpam, a brilliant Zarin Shihab, who commits the crime and prods Vakkachan to bury Rekha's body.
Vakkachan from 1985 was Vincent, the wealthy businessman in present day, and Pushpam is now his ailing wife Alice. As their own son questions their identities, Alice tells Vincent that the police would take her away now. But Vincent says that he won't let it happen and smothers her to death, preventing the police from nabbing Rekha's real killer, Pushpam.
Vivek, who survived an attempt on his life, comes to Vincent’s mansion and arrests him for his role in Rekha’s death.
In the final scenes, Rekha’s real-life sister and others lay her mortal remains to rest and Vivek hands over the one thing that Rekha aspired for – a photo from Mammotty chettan!
