Resident Evil is based on a popular computer game made by Capcom. The original game, set in a zombie-infested mansion, was one of the earliest and most popular games from the survival-horror genre. The game was first released in 1996 in Japan. This year Capcom is celebrating its 25th anniversary and the company has decided to celebrate the anniversary with another release in the game series titled Resident Evil Village.

There will soon be a live-action series based on the popular video game. However, even before the show goes on floors, Netflix has released an animated series based on the game called Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness. The series is produced by TMS Entertainment and Quebico with inputs from Capcom Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi. Given there are a lot of games, movies and comic books to keep track of, OTTplay brings together everything you need to know about Netflix’s newly released animated series:

Who are Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield?

The animated series centres around two fan-favourite protagonists from the game: Leon S Kennedy and Claire Redfield. They were first seen in Resident Evil 2, in which Leon is a Raccoon City Police Department officer and Claire is a college student searching for her brother. Leon and Claire need to fight their way through the hordes of zombies and uncover more evidence about the evil Umbrella Corporation.

In the animated series, this duo will return to action. Leon is dealing with a zombie outbreak while serving as a federal agent and Claire is a member of TerraSave, investigating a possible infection. Nick Apostolides and Stephanie Panisello are the voice artists for the characters.

Where does Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness take place in the series’ timeline?

According to Capcom, Resident: Infinite Darkness is set in 2006. As per the Resident Evil timeline, Resident Evil 4 unfolds in 2004 and the next main instalment, Resident Evil 5, in 2009. So, there is a significant gap between the two games and this animated series perfectly fills that void in the timeline. This period was also a safer option for Capcom as it does not interrupt the main chronological events of the main games.

Who are the new characters in Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness?

Almost every instalment of Resident Evil introduced fans to a new character. The spy, Ada Wong, who was introduced during Leon’s campaign, is an example of that. The animated series is also expected to introduce us to Jason, a member of the U.S Army Mad Dogs. This is in addition to Shen May, a U.S federal agent who might be involved in a mission with Leon. While these two are the confirmed characters, there might be many more in store as the series releases.

Resident: Infinite Darkness will stream on Netflix from July 8.
