Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty’s directorial debut Otta, which has Asif Ali and Arjun Ashokan in the lead, is based on the life of social worker and author S Hariharan, who will also be co-producing the film.

Mumbai-based Hariharan, who runs the NGO Children Reunited that helps rescue, rehabilitate and reunite runaway children with their families, had written the book Runaway Children which was released in 2015. Otta, which is set to go on floors on April 25, is based on the experiences in the life of Hariharan, according to the makers.

The movie was officially announced at a function in Kochi on Wednesday. Apart from Asif in the lead, the film also has Arjun Ashokan, Sathyaraj, Shobana, Rohini, Indrans, Adil Hussain, Divya Dutta and Jaffer Idukki. Yesteryear actress Jalaja’s daughter Devi Nair and Resul’s brother Baiju Pookutty will also be seen in pivotal roles in the movie, which has M Jayachandran as its composer. The movie will also have a host of foreign artistes as part of its cast and crew.

While initially there were rumours that the Academy Award-winning sound designer would be making his directorial debut with a Bollywood film, the ace technician chose a Malayalam film for his filmmaking foray. The acceptance of Malayalam films and their reach after the advent of OTTs are prime reasons for the same, according to a source from the team.

Meanwhile, Asif has a slew of films lined up for release – on OTT as well as theatres. He has completed shooting for Rajeev Ravi’s Kuttavum Shikshayum, Sibi Malayil’s Kothu, Jis Joy’s Innale Vare and Abrid Shine’s Mahaveeryar. The actor is also part of Nishanth Sattu’s A Ranjith Cinema, Jeethu Joseph’s Kooman, Sethu’s Maheshum Marutiyum and Venu’s upcoming movie Kaapa, which also has Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier and Anna Ben in the lead roles.
