Come May 1, actor Suriya’s much-awaited film Retro is set to release. Written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the film is a romantic actioner. With the advance bookings having already begun and only one day left for the release, the Suriya starrer has made a business of Rs 10.4 crore so far. Retro is an important film for Suriya, whose last film Kanguva had become a disaster at the box office as well as critically.
Retro is an upcoming Tamil film starring Suriya in the lead role. The film marks the actor’s first collaboration with Pizza filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj and is slated for release on May 1.
Ahead of this, the advance bookings of the film have been showing a good start. So far, the pre-sales of tickets worldwide have crossed Rs 10 crore. Suriya’s film will capitalise on the four-day weekend but will also face competition from simultaneous releases in the form of Nani’s HIT 3, Tourist Family and Hindi films Ajay Devgn's Raid 2 and The Bhootnii.
For the 7 Aum Arivu star, it is incredibly important for Retro to perform, given the film is the next release after Kanguva, which did not fare well. Surprisingly, the makers did not opt for early morning shows and Retro is set to release across the world at the same time: 9am IST.
Retro is touted to be a romantic action drama. The post-theatrical streaming rights of the film have been bagged by Netflix, which will stream it after the film completes its theatrical run for at least a month.
The film features Ala Vaikunthapurramulo actor Pooja Hegde along with Jayaram, Joju George, Karunas and others. Retro has music by Santhosh Narayanan. Backed by 2D Entertainment and Stone Bench, Retro is Suriya’s first release of this year.
