Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj is currently awaiting the release of his film Retro starring Suriya in the lead role, was also the one who gave the one liner of the story of 2025 Telugu film Game Changer, directed by S Shankar. The Ram Charan-starrer however did not do well at the box office, and opened to mixed criticism from audience. Ahead of Retro release, Karthik Subbaraj opened up on why the film did not fare well. Here is what he has to say

Karthik Subbaraj has a distinct voice. His films might become hit or flop at the box office, but bring out a unique storyline. The Pizza fame director, had given the one liner of the 2025 Telugu film Game Changer starring Ram Charan in the lead role. Directed by S Shankar, the film released in theatres for Sankranthi this year, but did not perform well. Criticism was levelled against Shankar for making a disappointing film.

In a recent interview on the sidelines of Retro promotion, Karthik Subbaraj spoke about Game Changer. “What I gave is a one-liner of the story. It is about a grounded IAS officer. When I gave the one-liner to Shankar sir, I was so excited to see how he will make it. Later, many writers came onboard and the story as well screenplay were changed a lot. You cannot define whether a film will connect with audience or not, and that film did not,” he said.

Karthik Subbaraj’s debut was with horror thriller Pizza , starring Vijay Sethupathi, Remya Nambeesan, Bobby Simha and others. He also went on to direct his idol and actor Rajinikanth in Petta . There is also Mercury is a horror thriller film with no dialogues and features Prabhu Deva, Sananth, Remya Nambeesan. It is about a group of friends who get haunted by a ghost who was once a victim of mercury poisoning. All these films are available on OTTplay Premium.
