Actor Suriya's latest film Retro, which released on May 1 in theatres, is gearing up for its OTT premiere. The film's rights are with Netflix which announced that Retro will premiere on May 30 in multiple languages. Retro, which is a romantic actioner, marks the first time Suriya is working with Petta filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj. A period film, which unfolds the events that happen in the life of an adopted son of a gangster, Retro has a lot going on, right from talking about the Chosen One to a man’s fate tied to his violent past. As the film is about to release on OTT in a day, here are the reasons as to why you should watch it this weekend.

Retro on OTT: Why stream Suriya’s romantic actioner with Karthik Subbaraj

Suriya’s intense avatar onscreen once again

Suriya, who is known for giving interesting performances in films like Ayan and Singam, unleashes his intense acting as Paari Vel in Retro. Marking his first collaboration with Karthik Subbaraj, Suriya aces a restrained acting; as a man who is unable to smile as his violent past never seems to leave him. Suriya plays Pani actor Joju George’s adopted son. As the latter hates and sees him as nothing more than a henchman, Paari Vel’s dysfunctional relationship leads to a lot more unveiling about himself and his past.

Santhosh Narayanan’s refreshing and unique soundtrack

Be it Kannadi Poove in which Suriya’s Paari Vel remembers his love Rukku (Pooja Hegde), or the wedding song Kanimma you can vibe with your closed ones, Santhosh Narayanan has once again collaborated with Karthik Subbaraj and has given a retro style music for the film. The composer’s works play an essential part in Retro’s storytelling, and you should watch out for the picturization of the Kanimma song where a lot happens.

That single shot sequence

So, as Kanimma is mentione,d and there are no spoilers to say that it is a wedding song of Rukku and Paari Vel. Not just a song, there is a lot happening, captured through a single-shot sequence, camera credits to cinematographer Shreyaas Krishna. As you vibe for Kanimma, the single shot takes us through the tension between the primary characters, a story-turning incident, and various dimensions of the plot are explored, which takes Retro to the next stage. With no more spoilers, watch it for yourself.

Karthik Subbaraj’s fondness to blend prophecy to heroism

The tag #TheOne had been widely used by the makers of Retro. To justify this, Karthik Subbaraj blends prophecy and heroism to tell the story of a gangster who wants to mend his ways. Karthik Subbaraj makes eccentric concepts like cult and tribe nation located on an island, and connects with a gangster who is destined to save them, in the form of an intricate screenplay.

A rooted story on oppressed vs oppressor

Remember Jigarthanda DoubleX? The film spoke about art as a means to record history. Karthik Subbaraj once again brings his flavour to tell the story of oppressor versus oppressed and how the latter wins over through sheer strength and virtues. Retro’s story also seems to derive from the same concept, as the second half pans out larger and stronger as a voice.
