One of the big May Day releases was Singam fame Tamil star Suriya’s Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj (of Pizza, Petta fame) , as a former gangster, who leaves his life of violence behind for love. But that becomes easier said than done, and he is forced to take up the fight yet again, for that exact same love. The film was highly anticipated, but has it met audience expectations? Going by what audiences have been posting on social media, it seems that the film has its moments, but has not left them entirely satisfied.

The consensus right now is that Suriya has tried valiantly to elevate the film, but Kallachirippu producer Karthik’s writing lets him down. The film, though, has already been picked up by Netflix for its post-theatrical rights and is expected to be available to stream by the first week of June.
Retro comes after the disappointment that was Kanguva, and Suriya needed a big win at the box office. Unconfirmed reports on social media point at shows being cancelled, despite the holiday start. Netizens have been pointing out that the actor’s last major box office hit was 2013’s Singam 2 , while the critically-acclaimed films like Soorarai Pottru and Jai Bhim were direct-to-OTT outings.
