Love a star-studded cast, anthologies and a stunning narrative? Amazon Studios' Solo might just be what the doctor ordered to bless you. The series is set to release on May 21 on Amazon Prime Video and the character vignettes of its cast were revealed recently.
Created by David Weil (Hunters, The Twilight Zone), Solos stars Academy Award winners Anne Hathaway, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, Uzo Adubo (Orange Is the New Black), Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Constance Wu (Crazy Rich Asians), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) and Nicole Beharie (Sleepy Hollow).
The series deals with the themes of humanity and connecting through shared experiences even in the loneliest of times. Though the show has thematic undertones that are relevant to the current plight of humans, it will also feature some sci-fi scenes. Primary protagonists will be seen grappling with time travel with AI robots, smart homes that turn on humans, illegal memory transplants and more. The show aims to shed light on the beautiful but heartbreaking truths of human life.
Amazon Prime Video gave sneak peeks into each episode on their Twitter handle on April 19. In episode 1, Hathaway plays a scientist who discovers time travel but as the story progresses, her questionable motives are revealed behind stepping into the future.
The second episode features Mackie as Tom, whose days are running out. He buys a controversial new product to ensure that his family is not alone when he’s gone.
In episode 3, audiences will see Mirren playing Peg. She is alone on a space shuttle and is headed towards the farthest corners of the universe. Peg is seen wondering how she landed up there.
Orange is the New Black’s Uzo Aduba plays Sasha in episode 4. She’s someone who enjoys her hermetic lifestyle post a global pandemic and has trouble trusting that the threat is past her.
Episode 5 features Wu as Jenny. She has been in the waiting room for ages and figures that it is punishment for something she did in the past.
Nicole Beharie’s character Nera is pregnant and living alone in the woods in episode 6. Nera’s pregnancy takes an unexpected turn soon when her home birth is ridden with unforeseen troubles.
The final episode of the series is the only one with two actors on-screen. Freeman plays Stuart and Dan Stevens plays Otto. With Otto’s help, Stuart attempts to remember who he is, or if what he’s done was worse.
