Richard Madden on working in Citadel: I found it intriguing that how damaged someone must be to choose the life they have

Richard Madden is making his debut with Priyanka Chopra Jonas in their upcoming series, Citadel. Richard and Priyanka both spoke about their characters on the show. They further explained the urge to work on the show.

At the recently held press conference of the show, Richard Madden shared, “What I found intriguing is how damaged they must be in certain ways in order to choose this kind of life. That’s something we’re going to explore with both of them and hopefully we’ll have more opportunity to delve into who they are – to be someone who is being someone else every day and then talk about playing another character all at once.”

“These are really complicated, intricate humans who will kill people, do bad things, who have questionable moral judgement. They’re complicated humans,” he added.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas reinstated the same by stating, “He really incapsulated what our characters do. Mason’s character comes from a place of really trying to understand the past and who he is as a person today. Nair is who she’s today and what she’s going to be in the future. They’re kind of star-crossed and drawn to each other no matter what happens. Outside of all the flashy action and big stunts and explosion and all that cool stuff, the show has so much heart because our characters can’t stop but be drawn to each other. That just makes for good TV. You invest in both Nair and Mason. At least that’s what I felt when I watched the show.”

She then spoke about the show and added, “It has many layers. There’s a lot going on. When you’re on the set, you want to take a certain approach and pitch in. Then I take a second approach.”

On working with Richard, she shared, “We protect each other and have each other’s backs and it’s really beautiful to know that we’re not trying to trip each other up. We’re not there to point something bad out. We’re truly there to support each other because we know the show is about the two of us together. We’ve always protected each other.”

Citadel is an Amazon Prime Video original series. Helmed by the Russo brother, it is slated to release on April 28, 2023.
