Veteran Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the Harry Potter film franchise, passed away on Friday. He was 72. His agent Belinda Wright broke the news to the media. He died in a hospital in Scotland. However, the cause of his death is not announced. 

Robbie Coltrane played Rubeus Hagrid in all eight Harry Potter films between 2001 and 2011. His character – a half-giant who is the gamekeeper of Hogwarts – is universally loved. However, the actor rose to fame with his 1990s detective TV series Cracker for which he won the Best Actor Award at the British Academy Television Awards three times. He also appeared in James Bond films GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough. 

Besides being a ‘wonderful’ actor, Wright described him as ‘forensically intelligent’ and ‘brilliantly witty’. As per reports, he is survived by his sister Annie Rae.
