Popular filmmaker Karan Johar is on cloud nine these days after the success of his directorial, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. At the box office, this movie has minted over Rs 50 crores within a span of just four days of its release.

For those who don’t know, this romantic comedy film features superstars Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh in key roles. While Alia essays the role of Rani – a Bengali journalist, Ranveer portrays the character of Rocky – a flamboyant Punjabi boy and the story details the love story brewing between Rocky and Rani.

Talking about where Ranveer Singh’s character drew inspiration from, Karan Johar told Film Companion, “In the Covid-19 pandemic, I decided to put (my next directorial) Takht on hold. I wanted to write a love story at that time. I am an avid user of Instagram. There are a lot of West Delhi influencers on the platform who are speaking and are not just content creators but also great influencers. I was very amused by how they are as a person. They are so full of life. They are joyous and say the funniest things. So, Rocky’s character inspiration came from there.”

Karan Johar even narrated how Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is different from 2014 film, 2 States.

“I always wanted to talk about it. I did not want the love story being conceptualized in my mind to be a replica of 2 States. Instead, my film (Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani) is about patriarchy and matriarchy. It shows the clash of the two worlds wherein the Punjabi families are essentially considered patriarchal in nature even though they are led by women. Even Bengali families are usually very matriarchal in nature. That is the core thought behind this creation. Also, there is a personal story behind this creation which I don’t want to speak about which formed the crux of Dharam ji and Shabana ji’s love story,” shared Karan Johar.

Karan Johar, the popular filmmaker even confessed that Ranveer Singh’s character, Rocky, has several similarities from Barbie and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham....

“So, when all that came together, Rocky needed to be a lovable character. Rocky had to be Poo (a character from Kareena Kapoor’s iconic 2001 movie Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...). He had to be shown as Poo but updated. He was like the male Poo and Ken to Barbie. He is like Barbie after borrowing character traits from Poo. It’s ironic that the Hollywood movie, Barbie is also out here. Rocky was like a perfect kind of Ken who had rough edges,” said Karan.

He added, “I’m always very amused by the gym culture. I feel boys only talk about that. I wanted him to be a gym-going boy but golden-hearted. He (Rocky) was sabka banda, yaar, dost! He (Rocky) not just wore Gucci on his sleeves but also a heart on his sleeves. That’s how Sushant, Sumit, and Ishita collectively brought Rocky Randhawa to life. Also, I feel it is true that Ranveer is a genius. The idea was to make Rocky lovable, vulnerable, and obviously clueless to the world.”
