Upon its release in theatres, filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s highly anticipated movie Cirkus faced disappointment from movie buffs. The film, which was expected to be one of the biggest releases of 2022, recorded lackluster numbers at the box office, with a lifetime collection of Rs 32.10 crore. Based on William Shakespeare’s renowned play The Comedy of Errors, Cirkus featured a talented ensemble cast including Ranveer Singh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Pooja Hegde and Varun Sharma.
Taking full responsibility for the film’s failure, Shetty expressed that he does not wish to blame anyone else. He acknowledged that somewhere along the line, they went wrong.
The director highlighted that Cirkus was made during the pandemic, with the intention of catering to the audience of that particular time. He shared, “I know what we did. We, obviously, went wrong somewhere. It was made right after Sooryavanshi and in the middle of the pandemic for the workers. It was a small film meant for the audience of that time,” the filmmaker said during his conversation with IndiaToday.
Despite the disappointment with Cirkus, Rohit Shetty acknowledged the audience's role in making his previous film, Sooryavanshi, starring Akshay Kumar, a hit despite the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the time when cinemas were operating at 50% occupancy.
While taking full ownership of the failure of Cirkus, Shetty expressed confidence in bouncing back with his successful franchises like Singham and Golmaal. He shared that his team humorously jests with him, saying, “Every 5 years, you are grounded by such failures.”
Rohit Shetty is currently seen hosting Khatron Ke Khiladi 13. He also has Indian Police Force, with marks Sidharth Malhotra’s debut in a web series. Furthermore, Shetty is set to embark on the production of the third installment in the popular Singham franchise.
The movie will once again feature Ajay Devgn reprising his iconic role as Bajirao Singham. It will mark the fifth installment in Shetty's cop universe.
