The movie marks the debut directorial of Jithu Madhavan and is inspired from true events

It’s been a while since Mollywood has had a horror-comedy – a genre that was almost a staple last decade. Now, Soubin Shahir, Arjun Ashokan and Chemban Vinod Jose are all set to revive the genre as well as some spirits along the way in debutant filmmaker Jithu Madhavan’s Romancham.
The film, which had wrapped up its shoot earlier this year, is set in Bengaluru in 2007 and revolves around a bunch of roommates. In an earlier interview with us, Jithu had said that it’s based on an incident that happened in his life, and the movie is a fictional version of it.
Jithu, who had worked as an associate director in movies such as Guppy and Ambili, has also scripted the venture, which also features several newcomers in pivotal roles. The trailer of the movie was released a few days ago and it promised some fun moments, with the roommates playing with a Ouija board and how a certain ‘spirit’ appears among them, turning their lives topsy-turvy.
The director had also told us that the characters in the movie all belong to different districts in Kerala and speak several dialects, mirroring the real-life scenario in a metro city such as Bengaluru where people across States come together for work. The filmmaker also stated that since it’s set in 2007, different aspects of the era will be showcased in the film.
Romancham is produced by Guppy filmmaker Johnpaul George, Soubin Shahir and cinematographer Girish Gangadharan. Bheeshmaparvam composer Sushin Shyam, who was approached to be part of the movie, after the principal photography had concluded also saw its footage and expressed his interest to become its co-producer.
The movie is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on October 14. It will clash with Shine Tom Chacko’s mystery crime thriller Vichithram and Anoop Menon, Prakash Raj’s Varaal, which is a political thriller.
