The plot of Royalteen revolves around the story of prince Karl Johan and newcomer Lena, who develop feelings for each other. Lena is both charmed and skeptical about daring the future king as she thinks it will put both of them in a difficult situation. Apart from that, there is also a bigger secret that Lena hides from Karl.
Director Per-Olav Sørensen said in a statement that there is a need for more content for young adults that showcases love in both authentic, shy, helpless, sensitive and vulnerable ways. He said that with Royalteen, they hope to fill that gap. He adds that this modern day Cinderella story is both fascinating and entertaining.
