S.S. Rajamouli’s blockbuster RRR is now in Japan and the entire team has been striving hard to promote the film in the new territory. The Ram Charan - Jr. NTR film reaches the Japanese shores carrying a lot of promise as many expect the film to not only enthral the local audience but also breach a few records set by other Indian and International releases. Thereby, trade analysts are carefully watching the film’s box office performance and going by the latest numbers, things are seemingly under control as of now.

According to the trade reports, RRR has gotten off to a credible start and has grossed ¥65 million or Rs. 3.61 crores during the opening weekend. The film took off on October 21 (Friday) with the biggest ever opening for an Indian film in Japan by collecting Rs. 1.06 crores (beating the previous best Saaho) and managed to yield positive results over the next two days to make it an impactful three-day weekend at the Japanese box office. Reportedly, RRR grossed Rs. 1.33 crores and Rs. 1.22 crores on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

While the magnum opus seems well on course to be one of the biggest commercial successes in Japan, a few analysts have reckoned that the film is meant to perform beyond the set expectations and leverage the hype surrounding its release. Considering the fanfare and the promotional budget of the film, and the fact that Rajamouli’s previous film Baahubali: The Conclusion is one of the highest grossers in Japan, RRR carries the burden of grossing more than ¥500 million or Rs. 28 crores during its theatrical run.

RRR was among the top contenders in the Indian entry to the Oscars race but the film eventually made way for Pan Nalin’s The Last Film Show or Chhello Show. Made at a budget of over Rs. 500 crores, RRR is said to be the most expensive Indian film made to date but thanks to the resounding worldwide success of the film it currently stands in the #4 spot in the list of highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
