Filmmaker SS Rajamouli and the team of his film RRR, led by actors Ram Charan and Jr NTR, were bang in the middle of final promotions ahead of its proposed January 7 theatrical release, when the makers had to take the difficult decision to postpone it indefinitely in the wake of rising Covid cases across the country and subsequent restrictions, including curfews and either complete closure of theatres or limited capacity in those that remained functional. This scenario, of course, is not ideal for a big-budget pan-Indian film like RRR, so the team postponed the release and set itself two scenarios.

Only a week ago, they’d announced that if the pandemic situation in the country gets better and all theatres open up to operate at full capacity they would release it on March 18, else, they’d wait another month and release on April 28, two weeks after KGF: Chapter 2. Now, it turns out that they’ve not chosen eitherdates and have finalized March 25 as the date that RRR will meet audiences. “#RRRonMarch25th, 2022.....FINALISED!” read the post on the film’s official social media post this evening.

Produced by DV. Danayya under the banner of DVV Entertainment, Rajamouli’s period drama, which also stars Alia Bhatt, Olivia Morris, Shriya Saran, Rahul Ramakrishna, Samuthirakani and Ajay Devgn in pivotal roles, has Jr NTR and Ram Charan play freedom fighter and revolutionary leader Komaram Bheem and Alluri Seetharamaraju respectively, in a fictional tale surmising their fight against the British Raj and the Nizam of Hyderabad. Written by Rajamouli, the film is based on an original story by KV Vijayendra Prasad. Earlier, the film was slated to release in a record number of movie halls across the globe. While it will be interesting to see how they work out the new release plans, the digital rights of the film have been sold to Zee5, so it will stream on the platform at some point.
