Rupali Ganguly to reprise her role in the prequel of the hit TV series Anupama for Disney+ Hotstar

For the first time in the Indian entertainment industry, a TV series will have its prequel on a digital platform. The streaming giant, Disney+ Hotstar has announced a prequel to the hit TV show Anupama, starring Rupali Ganguly. The move by the platform aims to celebrate the spirit and resilience of women.

Anupama, which airs on Star Plus and is also available to stream on Disney+ Hotstar, is one of the highest rating Hindi shows on television. Anupama is an ongoing series that has aired over 500 episodes in about two years. The new series, created exclusively for the streaming platform, will offer viewers a closer look at Anupama’s life and her early years into her marriage.

The prequel will have 11 episodes. Rupali Ganguly will be reprising her role as Anupama. The show will also feature her on-screen husband Vanraj, played by Sudhanshu Pandey, and other members of the cast from the television series. The episodes will be released over 11 days. The prequel will be exclusively available to stream on the platform. They will not be broadcast on TV. 

Gaurav Banerjee, head, content, Disney+ Hotstar and HSM Entertainment Network, Disney Star said in a press statement that it is a norm to experiment with new formats at Disney+ Hotstar and that's how they came up with the idea of a prequel for the show. As Anupama has an avid fan following, they decided to further deepen the audience's connection with the character in an all-new format. "We are confident that this exciting format will resonate well with India’s series-loving fandom and make the viewers fall in love with the character once again,” he said.

The TV show Anupama was launched in July 2020 and airs on Star Plus. It is adapted from the popular Bengali series Sreemoyee. But the Hindi show focuses on the life of a Gujarati homemaker, Anupama who is a devoted wife and a mother. She lives for her family but is never really appreciated or respected for the sacrifices and compromises she makes for them. The show revolves around her struggles to find her independence and voice in life.

The prequel to the much-loved character on TV will soon be available on Disney+ Hotstar.
