Sapthami Gowda's tryst with the '90s setting has taken a new shape with S. Krishna's Kaali. The Kantara actress recently signed on to star alongside Abishek Ambareesh in an intense love story that is set against the backdrop of the Cauvery riots of the 1990s. And according to the latest updates, Kaali is now officially underway.
As revealed by a few industry trackers and media outlets, Abishek and Sapthami participated in a special muhurtha event organized on Monday, November 28, in Bengaluru. The duo was seen clicking pictures along with fans and also interacting with the media at what seems like an intimate and low-profile gathering.
Although media outlets began speculating about Sapthami Gowda's involvement in the film, the makers confirmed the same only a few days ago. In an interview with a popular daily, director S. Krishna revealed that Kaali is a 'fictionalized version' of a real-life incident that occurred back in the '90s and that the ill-fated Cauvery riots will serve as the main setting for his love story: apparently, Abishek Ambareesh will play the role of an angry young man while Sapthami's role in the film remains under the wraps. Abishek will be seen playing a person hailing from a village in Kaali and has reportedly shed weight to fit the bill.
Interestingly, Sapthami Gowda's previous and most popular film to date, Kantara, too was set in the 1990s wherein she played the role of the forest guard Leela. Although her character lacked a substantial arc, many lauded her for pulling it off with grace and even admired the on-screen chemistry between her and Rishab Shetty. When quizzed about her future projects, Sapthami repeatedly said that she is keen on taking time to decide what excites her the most.
On the other hand, Abishek Ambareesh has an array of releases lined up that ranges from gritty action thrillers like Bad Manners to S. Mahesh's untitled epic period film. He is yet to have a release since making his debut back in 2018 with Amar.
