Saali Mohabbat: Divyenndu Sharma on playing layered character in Tisca Chopra's film; 'He’s a go-getter, very human'

Saali Mohabbat is a 2024 suspense drama starring Radhika Apte and Divyenndu Sharma, directed by Tisca Chopra in her directorial debut. The film, which premiered at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, is now all set to be released on ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium) on December 12, 2025. Ahead of the release, Divyenndu opened up about his layered grey character in Saali Mohabbat. 

Divyenndu Sharma on his Saali Mohabbat role

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Divyenndu Sharma opened up about his character, Ratan, in Saali Mohabbat. He shared that Ratan is a police officer who really wants to grow in life and wants to break free from the setup he lives in. Ratan has high expectations for himself, for his life, and for how he wants to live, and his mother also really wants him to succeed, and somewhere, he is an opportunist. However, Divyenndu added that viewers will see that side of Ratan only as the story unfolds with its twists and turns.

“What I found interesting about this guy is that he’s very human. We all know that feeling — when you believe you can do much more but people don’t recognize your potential, and you’re not finding the right opportunity. That’s how I understood Ratan. He’s a go-getter. That’s the best way to sum him up," Divyenndu further added. 

The Mirzapur actor shared that relating to a character like Ratan wasn’t easy, but Ratan is a very human guy who wants to get things done without harming anyone. He’s very clear that he will do whatever serves his purpose as long as he doesn’t hurt anyone. 

"That’s the line he draws for himself and never wants to cross. We all deal with emotions like greed, love, and survival in everyday life. So yes, playing Ratan was a tightrope walk because he becomes a grey character, but he’s also searching for the truth. His sense of duty is very strong. And in that search for truth, if he can gain something for himself along the way, he doesn’t mind. That’s who he is," Divyenndu added.

Divyenndu on working in Tisca Chopra's directorial

Sharing his experience of working on Tisca Chopra's debut directorial, Divyennu said that being directed by Tisca was fun. He shared that he has worked with a lot of first-time directors, and they have this lovely nervous energy, which is a great sign because it shows how much the work matters to them. 

"What I really liked about Tisca was her openness to suggestions. She was very receptive and collaborative rather than simply dictating what she wanted. She brings great energy to the set, and I really enjoyed working with her," he said.

Lastly, Divyenndu added that Tisca being an actor definitely helped because there are a lot of unsaid things she already understood, which made his job and life much easier.
