Debutant director Rohan Parashuram Kanawade’s Marathi film Sabar Bonda (Cactus Pears) has dropped on Netflix as of February 6, 2026. The 2025 film, which did the rounds of film festivals across the globe and won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, had a theatrical run in India in September last year. The film, which received nothing but overwhelmingly glowing reviews, struggled to find a digital streamer for a while, Rohan had said. That ends now.

Starring Bhushaan Manoj and Suraaj Suman in the lead, Sabar Bonda’s cast also includes Jayshri Jagtap, Nitin Bansode, Harish Baraskar, Ram Daund, Vidya Joshi, Hemant Kadam, Rani Kasliwal, among others. The film follows 30-something-year-old Anand (Bhushan), who has to travel back to his ancestral village, following the demise of his father.
As Anand navigates this personal loss and the mourning period rituals, he realizes that the towns folk are more interested in his unmarried status. ‘Still looking for the right girl’ is what his mother advises him to tell nosy family members. His childhood pal Balya (Suraaj), meanwhile, is also not married yet, even though there is immense pressure on him to ‘settle down’.
What happens when Anand and Balya reconnect, first over shared memories from a time not long ago, and then over what they mean to each other forms the crux of Rohan’s film, which runs a little under 2 hours in duration. The film’s sensitive portrayal of queer romance had sparked online discussions that it should have been India’s official entry to the Oscars.
