After the massive success of Gadar 2: The Katha Continues (2023), Sunny Deol's next big-screen outing is Jaat, set to debut in April and fans are getting quite excited about it. But few are aware that the actor is working on a new film, Safar, which is still in its early stages of post-production. As per the latest reports, filmmaker Shashank Udapurkar's family drama, Deol, plays a family man who, due to life's challenges, learns to enjoy every moment. This portrayal is a radical departure from his usual macho image. Given the sensitive nature of the subject matter, it appears that the producers are opting for an OTT release rather than a theatrical run.

As per Mid Day, location shooting for Safar concluded in 2024. The film also stars Darshan Jariwala and Simran Bagga. In preparation for a direct-to-OTT release, producer Vishal Rana is now in discussions with various streamers. According to a source informing the tabloid, the audience loves to see Deol in larger-than-life parts, where he takes on bad guys solo and doesles out punchy speech, since he signed many actioners after the success of Gadar 2. That portrayal is changed by Safar. In a film devoid of action, the story centres on Deol, a middle-aged family guy who discovers the meaning of life and the secret to happiness: helping others. He has no idea what his fans are expecting from him, but he loved the tale when Rana and Udapurkar contacted him with it, so he said yes right away.

The director, who has helmed Anna (2016) and Prawaas (2020) in Marathi, wished to delve into a new side of Deol's acting persona with Safar. Producers are likely considering a theatrical release, given their leading actor is currently enjoying a wave of popularity.

Shift to OTT release plans

The source says, though, that the makers decided to have an OTT release because it's an intimate and heartfelt story about a family. They reasoned that a digital platform would be better suited to cover such topics. The team is targeting a June delivery date for their OTT platform, with the expectation of releasing it by year's end.

Earlier, a video of Deol stumbling about Juhu in what appeared to be an intoxicated state went viral in December 2023. After his admirers voiced their concerns, the actor took to social media to reassure them that he was just filming and not drunk. In reality, the scene was shot for the forthcoming Safar.
