Despite predictions that the film's leading actors would be relative unknowns, Mohit Suri's romance drama Saiyaara has been a huge financial success. One of the biggest surprises of the year, the film starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda has surpassed the collections of big-budget productions headed by famous performers, crossing the Rs 100 crore mark in just five days of its release.

Day-wise growth

Earnings for Saiyaara increased somewhat from Rs. 24 crore on Monday to Rs. 25 crore on its first Tuesday (day 5). The film had an outstanding weekend, earning Rs. 21.5 crore on Friday, Rs. 26 crore on Saturday, and Rs. 35.75 crore on Sunday, reaching its highest point. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the total collection after five days at the domestic box office is at Rs 132.25 crore.

Salman Khan and Rashmika Mandanna's Sikandar earned Rs. 129.95 crore when it closed in India, but this film has already surpassed it. Saiyaara is currently trending around Akshay Kumar's Sky Force, which grossed Rs 134.93 crore. If things keep going the way they are, Saiyaara should surpass that number by the end of day six.

Record-breaking romance

In addition, the romantic drama genre is seeing record-breaking performances from this film. Saiyaara broke all records for opening weekends for romance films, earning Rs 119 crore worldwide (as reported by producer Yash Raj Films). India contributed Rs 84 crore, while outside markets contributed Rs 17.25 crore.

This figure means that Saiyaara has amassed more money than any previous debut film starring children of famous actors in the business. Janhvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khattar's Dhadak (2018) made Rs 73 crore, whereas Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt's Student of the Year (2012) brought in Rs 70 crore. Ananya Panday's cousin and nephew of Chunky Panday, Ahaan Panday, has recently broken through with a stronger start than most.

Aneet Padda shines

The performance by Aneet Padda, who became famous for her roles in Big Girls Don't Cry and Salaam Venky, has also received accolades. YRF's decision to not publicly promote the film with the starring couple has not affected its reach and popularity. Additionally, to make tickets affordable for young people, the studio has asked that exhibitors do the same.

As a director, Mohit Suri has now achieved his largest opening. Ek Villain (Rs 16 crore), Aashiqui 2 (around Rs 6 crore), and Murder 2 (about Rs 7 crore) were his earlier flicks with more modest opening weekend grosses.

Can Saiyaara beat the biggies?

How far Saiyaara can go in rewriting box office history for debut-led romances will be determined in the following days by Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par (Rs 164.74 crore), Ajay Devgn's Raid 2 (Rs 179.30 crore), and Akshay Kumar's Housefull 5 (Rs 198.41 crore).
