The trailer of Sohini Sarkar and Rajnandini Paul-starrer Sampurna was dropped on July 22. The Hoichoi series which will drop on July 29 deals with the ordeal of a woman, who is a victim of marital rape. Directed by Sayantan Ghosal, the series also features Prantik Banerjee, Anubhab Kanjilal, Laboni Sarkar and others.
The trailer starts with a wedding ceremony, where Rajnandini ties the knot with Anubhab. Sampurna, played by Sohini and the sister-in-law of Anubhab, phrases the groom to the bride. Soon after the marriage, Sampurna learns that her newlywed sister-in-law is a victim of marital rape. The story encompasses her fight against her husband, her in-laws, her own family, and the whole society against this oppressive abuse that is apparent in every other family. In fact, the first announcement of Sampurna took place on March 23, 2022, when the topic of criminalising marital rape was thrown open.
Sayantan Ghosal said, “Sampurna is a very important project for me, as it is a topic that needs to be spoken about as much as possible. Of course, there’s a lot more awareness of marital rape now than before, but I still feel a lot of people carry a faulty notion about marriage and its correlation with consent. There isn’t any. Both are mutually exclusive and ‘no’ in any situation means 'no’, irrespective of the relationship between the parties.”
Adding to this, Sohini Sarkar who plays Sampurna in the series, said, “Upon hearing the concept of the show, I knew I had to be a part of it. It touches upon a very important subject and as women, we must take a stand on issues like this. With shows like this, we can reach a wider audience and educate them. While the primary motive of content is to entertain, it also has the power and duty to give a message and educate the masses on important issues and Sampurna aims to do that.”
