Director Santosh Sivan, whose latest release Jack N’ Jill hit theatres on May 20, will next be doing a period film in Malayalam. The filmmaker will once again be teaming up with Prithviraj Sukumaran for his directorial venture, if everything goes according to plan.
Santosh had confirmed to OTTplay in a recent interview that he is indeed planning a period film in Malayalam and he wants to get back to his roots with the movie. However, he said that work on the movie is still at a nascent stage and he would focus on it only after he completes shooting for his next directorial venture in Bollywood.
In another interview given to an online portal, the filmmaker said that he is keen on having Prithviraj onboard for the movie. “He’s a friend and I want to discuss the idea with him and get him to be part of the film,” said the director. Santosh had already teamed up with Prithviraj for two of his Malayalam directorials – Ananthabhadram and Urumi, which is a period film set in the 16th century.
Prithviraj was also part of Jack N’ Jill, albeit as a narrator. On doing the sci-fi comedy, which is made on a smaller budget compared to his previous films, Santosh told us, “Everyone has been asking me when am I going to start my next epic film. So, I wanted to take a break and do something that was contemporary and fun, without the expectations that come with my films.”
Santosh, meanwhile, has also completed directing Mumbaikar, which is the Hindi remake of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Tamil film Maanagaram. On the status of the upcoming Vikrant Massey and Vijay Sethupathi-starrer, Santosh says that the movie will be releasing on an OTT platform soon. “Its rights have already been sold,” said the filmmaker, who is also working as a cinematographer in Mohanlal’s directorial debut Barroz: The Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure.
