Sapphire: Ed Sheeran reveals Aashiqui 2's Tum Hi Ho inspired him to collaborate with Arijit Singh; 'Was proper spellbound'

Ed Sheeran dropped his new song, Sapphire, ft. Arijit Singh's vocals and a cameo by Shah Rukh Khan. In a new post, Ed shared how he was inspired to work with Arijit.

Music lovers are on cloud nine ever since Ed Sheeran dropped a new song, Sapphire, featuring Arijit Singh's vocals and a cameo of Shah Rukh Khan. Ed dropped the 3-minute video for Sapphire, which he shot during his trips to India. The famous video of Ed riding Arijit's scooter is also shown in the video, as is a selfie of Ed and Shah Rukh singing the lyrics of Sapphire. Now, in a new post, the Perfect singer shared how he was inspired to work with Arijit, and it has an Aashiqui 2 connection. 

Ed Sheeran on collaborating with Arijit Singh for Sapphire

Sapphire by Ed Sheeran and Arijit Singh has been on repeat on the playlist for music lovers ever since it dropped. The unexpected yet much-awaited collaboration took the internet by storm. Now, in a new post, Ed revealed how he discovered Arijit and what made him fall in love with the Raabta singer to collaborate with him.

Sharing a clip of Sapphire featuing Ed and Arijit, the Shape of You singer wrote on his Instagram account, "i first became aware of @arijitsingh music when i watched Aashiqui 2 and heard Tum Hi Ho. I was proper spellbound by his voice, the song, the scene in the movie. I checked him out, and got in touch, and said whenever you wanna sing together i’m down."

Sheeran was also a guest with Arijit during the latter's London gig and sang Perfect there. Ed played him an early version of Sapphire in the dressing room, and he instantly had ideas for instruments and melodies.

"We then were pen pals over email for a bit, until I was in India for tour. I said to him, we should finish this in person, and he said, please come to my home town so I can show you my home and culture," he wrote.

Ed wrote that they took a flight to Kolkata, then a 5 and a half hour drive to Arijit's hometown. He also revealed, "Arijit taught me Punjabi and how to pronounce it all properly, and showed me Sitar. We then had dinner, and scooted around the village to see the sunset and moon with my dad. was a proper core memory i’l always cherish with my father, and i’m honoured to have created in this way with Arijit."

Praising Arijit Singh's soulful voice, Ed Sheeran said that he is one of the most talented humans he has ever met, and he is grateful that Arijit shared his talent with him for Sapphire. 

"The full Punjabi version we recorded will be out in a couple of weeks, but until then I’ll be drip-feeding fun videos from our time together. enjoy !," Ed cncluded. 

Meanwhile, Arijit sang Tum Hi Ho which received worldwide appreciation. The music of the song is composed and written by Mithoon. The song is from the blockbuster movie, Aashiqui 2, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur. 

Fans react to Ed Sheeran's post

Reacting to the post, one fan wrote, "Love this so much! can't wait to hear the full Punjabi version soon." Another commented, "It’s such a great song - I can’t wait for the Punjabi version!." A third fan said, "It’s like reading a personal journal, so wholesome."

Meanwhile, singer Armaan Malik wrote, "best people."
