Arjun Kapoor’s Sardar Ka Grandson is the latest Bollywood romcom on Netflix that has proved that a pandemic cannot deter entertainment from reaching the audience. Directed by Kaashvie Nair, the film is an endearing story of a grandson trying to fulfill his grandmother's last wish.
Sardar Ka Grandson stars Kapoor as Amreek Singh - his grandmother’s beloved who returns to India and attempts to bring her house back from Lahore to Amritsar. With a beautiful love story embedded in the flashbacks of Sardar’s (Neena Gupta) life before the partition, Sardar Ka Grandson is a refreshing family entertainer that has been widely streamed ever since its release.
Keeping in mind the current restrictions owing to the pandemic, the filmmakers of Sardar Ka Grandson urged audiences to watch the movie at home with their loved ones. “Each film has its journey and this one had a journey where you can watch it on the television with your family around you,” said Nair, in an interview with OTTPlay.
The cast’s family and friends huddled together earlier this week to stream the movie. Members of the Kapoor family took to Instagram to share their excitement at the film’s release with a photograph of Jahnvi, Boney and Khushi Kapoor watching the film. Arjun who dedicated Sardar Ka Grandson to his grandmother also streamed the movie with her.
Discussing his role in the film, Arjun said, “As Punjabi as the character is, Amreek for me was exciting because I’ve never done a coming-of-age film. Amreek comes of age over the course of this film - he is a guy who can barely say sorry to his girlfriend without having an ego and by the end of it, he’s willing to fold his hands and request, literally beg, people and the government to just fulfill a wish of his grandmother’s.”
The actor’s extended family Shanaya, Jehaan, Maheep and Sanjay Kapoor also captured themselves watching the film and appreciated the actor’s project on social media.
Neena Gupta, who plays the role of Sardar to perfection by adding her own quirks and eccentricities, streamed the movie with her daughter Masaba, her husband Vivek and actor Satyadeep Misra.
Rakul Preet Singh’s character Radha acts as Amreek’s support system in Sardar Ka Grandson. Ultimately, it is Radha who figures out how to relocate Sardar’s house and fulfill her wish. “The film was made for the big screen but looking at the circumstances today, just being able to bring relief to people on a platform that serves entertainment is great. The kind of reach that Netflix has ensures that Indians not only in India but also abroad can watch the movie. In times like this, if you can get even two hours of a sense of relief from sitting at home, I think it's great,” said the actress, whose parents also tuned into the movie.
Sardar Ka Grandson also stars Aditi Rao Hydari and John Abraham as young Sardar and her husband Gursher Singh respectively. The couple is separated when the post partition violence in Lahore results in Gursher’s death and young Sardar has to travel to India to make a life for herself.
