Malayalam actor Asif Ali’s enjoying an incredible phase in his career, almost like a Midas Touch, as his recent films like Thalavan , Level Cross , Kishkinda Kaandam and Rekhachitram , have either done well at the box office or received critical acclaim. His most recent release, Sarkeet, is also one such that is being hailed for its thought-provoking take on ADHD, as told through the bond his character develops with a young boy.

Asif Ali says there's no specific plan in choice of scripts, but will give police roles a break

Talking about his last few films, each of which were in diverse genres, Asif says that he was not consciously picking and choosing them in order to bring in this variety into his filmography. “There is no specific plan in the choice of films. When I get a good narration that excites me, I immerse myself in it, and then, the genre does not come into the picture. The only decision I have taken right now is that I don’t want to play police characters for a while,” Asif said during his interaction with RJ Rafi on Star Jam.

Asif, who has played cop in films like Kuttavum Shikshayum, Kooman, Thalavan and Rekhachitram in recent times, adds that he does not look whether it is a thriller, family drama or feel-good cinema, as long as he is able to deliver a good movie that audiences would want to come to theatres to watch. While he doesn’t think that audiences will wonder why he’s often seen in police uniform, as far as he is concerned, the focus is only on providing an entertaining and engaging experience for them.

As an actor, Asif is keen not to get typecast, which is also the reason he has chosen to put the brakes on police roles for a while. "During the promotions of Rekhachitram, I kept hearing that each of my police characters have an identity of their own. I don't think I have it in me to do another cop role right now," he said with a laugh.

What the actor considers as his biggest win now is that audiences are coming to theatres to watch his films with a certain level of expectation, which wasn’t the case not long ago. The actor admits that he has not cracked the success formula, but what he is focused on is on doing films that he believes are good and giving his 100% to each of these projects, which he then puts across to audiences, who, in turn, make them successful.
