The Kerala Film Producers Association and the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce have been claiming that the Malayalam industry is going through a crisis, and have revealed dismal box office figures to back their claim. This move has not gone down well with Malayalam directors and actors. After Narivetta director Anuraj Manohar, now Sarvam Maya actor Nivin Pauly has spoken about the issue, saying that he doesn’t agree with it and that it was not necessary.

Malayalam actor Nivin Pauly, whose latest film Sarvam Maya opened to mostly positive reviews on December 25, 2025, touched upon the issue of hits of the year being revealed. Remarking that this is a new practice, Nivin said, “I don’t think this is necessary.”
“The effort should be on making good films. I don't understand why these figures are being revealed now. It was not a practice before. I personally think that it is not needed. When we as a fraternity are trying to take forward the industry, such acts could impact the entry of new investors. All businesses will have profits-losses. This does not have to be published. I don’t agree with revealing the figures,” said Nivin Pauly, who is also a film producer.
Nivin Pauly made the remarks while speaking to media personnel in Dubai as part of Sarvam Maya release.
Producers’ Association’s ‘hit list’ sparks row
The Producers’ Association had recently claimed that only 15 of the 183 Malayalam films that released in theatres in 2025 can be considered as successful. They further classified the list into 8 superhits, and 7 hits. This had prompted a strong reaction from director Anuraj Manohar as his movie Narivetta, starring Tovino Thomas, was not featured in the list.
On the other hand, Nivin Pauly’s Sarvam Maya released in theaters for Christmas. Akhil Sathyan has directed the film, which also features Aju Varghese and debutant Riya Shibu in key roles.
