Operation Java filmmaker Tharun Moorthy is all set for the release of his sophomore directorial titled Saudi Vellakka. The movie, which has Lukman Avaran, Binu Pappu, Sudhi Koppa and Dhanya Ananya in the lead, was recently screened at International Film Festival of India, Goa, and received a huge ovation.

Saudi Vellakka, which is based on a true story, is second time Tharun is teaming up with its lead actors Lukman and Binu who were also part of Operation Java. The upcoming movie revolves around the life of a 23-year-old who receives a court summons for a long-pending case. Though a portion of the film is set in a courtroom, the director had recently said he prefers to call the film a social drama, rather than a courtroom drama.

In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Tharun had told us, “It’s based on a crime, but it’s not an investigative thriller. Saudi Vellakka, like Operation Java, has a lot of tracks such as humour, satire and messages of social commitment. It can essentially be called a family drama.”

The film was shot in the coastal areas of Kochi such as Chellanam as well as in Perumbavoor. The makers had initially announced that the film will hit theatres on May 20 but this was postponed. The movie is now scheduled to release on December 2 and will go up against Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Gold as well as Amala Paul’s thriller Teacher.

Though Operation Java was Tharun’s debut film, Saudi Vellakka is just as special to him as the movie’s producer Sandip Senan of Urvashi Theatres had decided to back the movie even before the former thriller had hit theatres in 2021. “At that time, he didn’t watch Operation Java; all he heard about the movie was from me or from others in the industry. So, even though I got so many offers after Java’s release, this movie is really special to me. It is like my first film,” he said.
