Amazon Prime Video on Thursday dropped actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu's latest mythological drama Shaakuntalam without a lot of fanfare. The movie is now streaming on its platform for all the subscribers.

Samantha's career suffered a setback at the box office with Shaakuntalam. The much-awaited mythological drama was released on April 14 amid a lot of expectations. However, the movie ended up as the biggest box-office disaster till now in Samantha's career. The movie's producer Dil Raju suggested that the commercial failure of Shaakuntalam was "the biggest slip" in his long career spanning 25 years as a producer and distributor.

Not just in terms of box office collection, the movie was also a big critical disaster. Critics unanimously rejected the movie for its outdated approach to storytelling and amateur special effects that were devoid of any innovation and inspiration. Samantha was the face of the movie during the promotions as she was the only star in the cast with the potential to sell tickets in larger numbers. However, her character gets an underwhelming treatment in the movie. Director Gunasekhar has executed a half-baked job in adapting the epic and one of the most popular mythological stories in India for the big screen.

"What's the point of turning a mythological story into a movie if you can't highlight its moral and philosophical ideas? Clearly, Gunasekhar himself didn't fully understand the plot and the wisdom of the story he was dealing with and made a movie that superficially hops from one incident to another without any emotional depth. And Gunasekhar hasn't even given a thought as to how to make the story of Shaakuntala relevant for the people who live in the 21st century," wrote OTTplay's film critic Manoj Kumar R.

Samantha, however, has taken this failure in her stride as she has a lot of exciting projects in the pipeline including the big-budget spy thriller Citadel.
