Samantha’s much-awaited period love story, Shaakuntalam, has finally got a release date. The big budget mythological drama, which is helmed by Gunasekhar, also has Dev Mohan as part of the cast.
Samantha took to her social media page on Monday to reveal that the movie, which is produced by Neelima Guna, will hit theatres worldwide on February 17. Apart from a pan-India release with versions in several languages including Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam, the movie will also be releasing in 3D.
Samantha’s previous film Yashoda, which hit theatres in December and is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video, was a superhit and the actress will be hoping to extending her winning run at the box office with Shaakuntalam, which also has Aditi Balan, Mohan Babu, Prakash Raj, Gauthami, Madhoo, Kabir Bedi and Allu Arjun’s daughter Allu Arha in pivotal roles.
Malayalam actor Dev Mohan, who is making his Telugu debut with the film, will be seen essaying the role of King Dushyanta in the movie, which had wrapped up shooting in 2021. Dev, in an earlier interview with OTTplay, told us, “Shaakuntalam was a big learning experience for me. I shot for around 55 days and had 20 days of action scenes. It’s got an amazing character arc. Director Gunasekhar drained me in the sense that he extracted the best performances out of me. He doesn’t compromise; he knows what he wants and until he got that out of me, he didn’t allow me to rest.”
The actor also revealed that he had learnt sword fighting, horse-riding and archery to play the role in the movie. He had to also learn Telugu. “My dialogues were about 10-20 lines long. Because Dushyant is a king; he is a commanding presence and has more monologues. I didn’t take a single prompting during the film,” he said.
Meanwhile, Samantha is also part of the upcoming Telugu romcom Kushi, along with Vijay Deverakonda.
