On the occasion of International Women's Day 2022, Taapsee Pannu took to her social media pages and shared the new poster of Shabaash Mithu. In her upcoming film, the actor plays the role of the current Test and ODI captain of the Indian women's national cricket team, Mithali Raj. The poster features Taapsee showing off the jersey of Mithali while she gets cheered upon for her prolific batting skills.
The actor posted the poster with an inspirational message stating, "She continues to inspire millions like me. To break a few stereotypes to lay down a new path ahead for many to follow. Mithali Raj captained India to the 2017 Women's Cricket World Cup final. Her life's adventures in the field of women's cricket are chronicled in the film based on her life. It depicts her challenges and triumphs in women's cricket.
The film was finalised on December 3, 2019, Mithali Raj's birthday, with Taapsee Pannu in the lead role and Rahul Dholakia as director. Pannu released her workout images from December 3, 2019, January 29, 2020, and January 27, 2021. Taapsee Pannu re-posted photos of her preparation and training for the film in March 2021.
Mithali Raj's buddy, Nooshin Al Khadeer, a former cricket player and Mithali Raj's coach, was her coach. The film was supposed to be released on February 5, 2021, under the direction of Rahul Dholakia, but it was postponed owing to the aftermath of COVID-19.
Due to a scheduling conflict, Srijit Mukherji took over as director of the film from Rahul Dholakia in June.
Principal photography began on April 5, 2021, but was postponed owing to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Filming was finally completed on November 9. The film was shot at Lord's Cricket Ground in London, as well as other domestic and international locales, to capture the true atmosphere of Mithali's life.
