Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan has managed to overtake Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal in 2023. Not just Jawan, movies like Vikrant Massey’s 12th Fail and Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2, both of which were originally undermined but proved to be gems, also beat Animal. According to a list unveiled by Ormax Media, they were the most loved theatrical releases of the year. Sam Bahadur, Pathaan and even The Kerala Story made it to the list.

Top 3

No brownie points for guessing, Jawan takes the cake. The Shah Rukh Khan-Atlee collaboration proved to be one-of-a-kind and received massive love both in theatres and on OTT. The movie became the highest grossing film of the year and clearly, also received all the love. When talking about love, one film managed to impress everybody. That was Vikrant Massey’s 12th Fail, which was the story of a comeback with some magic called love. The movie ranks second on the list. It would be easy to guess which film ranked third, for it was one of the most-spoken-about in the year. Released in May, The Kerala Story, featuring Adah Sharma, was loved and hated, but the film just could not be ignored. It sparked debates and became one of the most controversial films of the year. This one, too, was among the highest-grossing, at least initially.

Top 5

There was a strong competition between Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 and Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal for a spot in top five. The former managed to overtake Animal and became the fourth most loved. Interestingly, Animal also featured Sunny’s brother Bobby Deol as a very intriguing character. It was a clash of the brothers and both won.

Bottom 5

Vicky Kaushal’s Sam Bahadur, otherwise loved as a film, was overshadowed because it was in direct competition with Animal. Same was the case with the list, where this one lost out on top five and came sixth. Shah Rukh Khan started the year with a bang through his movie Pathaan but beat his own record with Jawan. As they say, lost but not forgotten. The movie, the official first from the YRF Spy Universe, was the first blockbuster of the year and ranked seventh on the list.

The eighth and ninth spot were taken by the other underrated movies of the year. They were Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2 (released with Gadar 2) and Rani Mukerji’s Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway (in theatres during Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar success). Surprisingly, Karan Johar’s big directorial film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, came last on the list. At the 10th spot, this movie left a mark of its own in the year that was.
