If Sujoy Ghosh is indeed busy with something other than helming Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming film King, as rumored, then we will finally know. A report in Mid-Day states that the filmmaker is now collaborating with Shahid Kapoor on a thriller.
Sources told the tabloid that the actor had considered the screenplay, but the timing wasn't right. At this point, coordinating their schedules and making it a reality are both top priorities for Kapoor and Ghosh.
The plot is still a mystery, but given the filmmaker's track record in suspenseful films like Kahaani (2012), starring Vidya Balan, and Jaane Jaan (Kareena Kapoor Khan's OTT debut) for Netflix India, we can probably assume that it's a thriller.
Kapoor has also worked in this genre before. Even in his early romantic hero roles, the actor managed to ace suspenseful scenes in Fida (2004), directed by Ken Ghosh. Following that, in 2006, he starred in 36 China Town, a trademark Abbas-Mustan mystery. The actor also featured in the heist thriller Badmaash Company (2010) and Haider (2014) by Vishal Bhardwaj. Also shown on JioCinema last year was the action thriller Bloody Daddy by Ali Abbas Zafar. In 2023, Shahid also made his OTT debut on Prime Video India's thriller series Farzi with Raj & DK. The action movie Deva (directed by Rosshan Andrews) and a film by Vishal Bhardwaj will be his next appearances.
As per Hindustan Times, Kapoor's team, however, denied on Monday morning, December 30, that he was in negotiations with Ghosh for a project of this sort.
The filmmaker reportedly decided not to direct King, a crime drama he created for Shah Rukh Khan, going forward. Instead, Siddharth Anand would step into the role. King features Shah Rukh in a part that is suitable for his age, and it will also be Suhana Khan's first time appearance on the big screen. Abhishek Bachchan is the main villain in the film, which also co-stars Abhay Verma. According to reports, it would be released in theatres on the occasion of Eid in 2026, competing with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War. Shah Rukh and wife Gauri Khan's production company, Red Chillies Entertainment, is behind it.
