Shamshera starring Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt is one of the biggest movies of the year considering its monumental scale. The movie hit theatres on Friday and was expected to make waves at the box office from the get go. In reality, the movie has had an underwhelming opening in the country.

According to industry business analyst Taran Adarsh, the period action drama made Rs. 10.25 crore in India on its opening day. “#Shamshera sends shock waves within the industry, as Day 1 ends on an underwhelming note... National chains poor, single screens below expectations... All eyes on Day 2 and 3 biz... Fri ₹ 10.25 cr. #India biz,” he wrote on Twitter.

The movie also earned only the fifth biggest opening for a Hindi language movie this year. While Kartik Aayan led Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 takes first place, Bachchan Paanday, Samrat Prithviraj and Gangubai Kathiawadi are at the second, third and fourth spots respectively.

Reportedly, the movie is also the second widest release post-pandemic, having occupied over 4000 screens on its first day. With the collection numbers are low because the occupancy on the opening day was low. With less than favourable reviews, we will have to wait and see how the movie does on its first weekend.

“However, the lack of originality and repeating the flashback sequences makes it feel like it's been there long enough. Oh yes, the same old trend of narrating a story and showing flashback sequences, which was present in the film just a few minutes back,” read a part of the movie’s review on OTTplay.

Also starring Vaani Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Ashutosh Rana and Saurabh Shukla in important roles, the movie is directed by Karan Malhotra. Bankrolled by Yash Raj Films, the period action drama is now available in theatres.
