It’s been more than a year since Avatara Purusha: Ashtadigbandana Mandalaka released in theatres. A web series concept that director Suni condensed into movie format, the story was meant to be told in two parts and the team’s contention was that there would not be more than a 100-day gap between the instalments. When the first part released, though, there was no word on the second, and a few days later, during an Instagram live, lead actor Sharan and Suni discussed it, with the filmmaker saying that a Dasara release in October looked likely, given that the film requires a lot of computer graphic work.

In the time since, though, there has been no word on when the film will actually be in theatres, with conflicting reports about its status emerging every now and then. A few weeks ago, there was a buzz that the second part may be in theatres in December this year, and the latest we hear on this is that the extensive VFX work that Suni has been talking about, has begun on the film.

Avatara Purusha is a film about dark magic, and while the first part explored it only fleetingly and ended with the Astadigbandana ‘lock’ being broken, as several players vied for the ‘Trishanku mani’. The second part is where most of the magic related action between Sharan and Srinagara Kitty’s characters will play out.

Avatara Purusha follows the Jois family, Rama (Sai Kumar) and Susheela (Bhavya), whose only son Karna goes missing as a youngster at a temple festival, while under his aunt Yashoda’s (Sudharani) care. The lad’s disappearance causes a rift between Rama and his sister Yashoda, which, decades later, the latter’s daughter Siri (Ashika Rangananth) attempts to mend by helping them find Karna again. While this more or less formed much of the narrative of the first part, the main crux of Avatara Purusha is the fact that the Jois’ family home is where Rama’s father Brahma Jois (Ayyappa Sharma) had hidden away the powerful magic tool – Trishanku Mani. The second part will explore whether the family can keep the dark forces that are after this gem at bay.
