Netflix on Sunday announced the digital premiere date of Shesham Mike-il Fathima, which stars Kalyani Priyadarshan in the lead role. The movie will debut on the platform on December 15, less than four weeks after its theatrical release.
The short OTT release window for new movies is one of the polarising topics in the Indian film industry. Even though the stakeholders in the southern cinema continue to push for keeping the new movies out of the streaming platforms as long as possible, the producers continue to operate on their own terms.
Most films, including Tamil and Malayalam, come out on the streaming platforms less than a month after their release in cinemas. The industry fears that this trend is negatively affecting the appeal of the cinema-going experience. In the meanwhile, it has become a norm of sorts in the Hindi film industry to refrain new movies from hitting streaming for at least 8 weeks after their theatrical debut.
In the meantime, Shesham Mike-il Fathima marked the directorial debut of Manu C Kumar. The film revolves around a happy-go-lucky girl from a seemingly conservative background. Even though she seems to follow some restrictions imposed on women by cultural dogmas, she also exhibits aspirations of a modern girl.
Fathima nurtures an amotion of becoming a sports commentator. And she defies the societal expectations to embrace her passion. Fathima, played by Kalyani, gains celebrity status after commenting during a local football match in Malabar. And that leads her to pursue bigger ambitions and gigs. While she aspires to break stereotypes and scale new heights as a sports commentator, first she has to overcome a few other social and cultural challenges.
Shesham Mike-il Fathima also stars Femina George, Aneesh G Menon, Shaheen Siddique and others.
