A Delhi family court granted divorce to Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan on grounds of cruelty by his wife Aesha Mukerji on Wednesday. According to Judge Harish Kumar’s judgement, Aesha subjected the cricketer to mental agony by compelling him to live away from his son for years.
The court accepted Shikhar Dhawan’s allegation made in the divorce petition on the ground that Aesha either did not contest or failed to defend herself. The court did not pass any order on the permanent custody of the child. The cricketer, however, gets the visitation rights to meet his son in India or Australia for the appropriate duration. Moreover, Dhawan can also chat with his son over video calls, the court ruled.
In its order, the court stated that Shikhar Dhawan is a ‘reputed International Cricketer’ and has been the ‘pride of the nation’, and hence ‘it is requested to take up the issue of visitation/custody of the minor son with its counterpart in Australia to help him have regular visitation or chatting with his own son or his permanent custody.’
“He (Dhawan) for no fault of his own had been through immense agony and anguish of living separately from his own son for years. Even though the wife denied the allegation, submitting that though she genuinely wanted to live in India with him, however, due to her commitment towards her daughters from her previous marriage requiring her to stay in Australia, she could not come to live in India, and that he was well aware of her commitment, yet she did not choose to contest the claim,” the court order read.
Shikhar and Aesha got married in October 2012.
