Actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty has often been vocal about the difficulties in getting the films that he produces to audiences. The Kantara maker has backed the projects of independent filmmakers like Natesh Hegde (Pedro and Vagachipani) and Jaishankar Aryar (Shivamma). Both Pedro and Shivamma were film festival darlings, but then struggled to get OTT deals. With platforms insisting on a theatrical release before deciding if they’d want to pick these films or not, Shivamma made it to theatres in June last year, while Pedro is yet to do so.
Shivamma opened to phenomenally good reviews during its festival run and subsequent theatrical outing too, but the box office figures, of course, remained low, given the festival film tag. It has finally managed to land a digital streaming partner, with Sun Network picking up the rights. Shivamma will be available on Sun NXT from April 4, 2025 onward. An official announcement to this effect came on April 3.
Starring Sharanamma Chetti as the title character, the film follows her, a mid-day meal cook at a rural government school, who attempts to make a quick buck by becoming a part of a pyramid scheme to sell health supplements. She puts in all her savings into this side hustle, only to realize that it may not exactly be her ticket to a rags-to-riches ending.
The film’s cast includes non-actors, like Sharanamma, namely, Chennamma Abbegere, Shivu Abbegere, Shruthi Kondenahalli, Chennappa Hansi and Shivanand Sadar, among others. Screened initially at the Busan International Film Festival, Shivamma won several accolades during its festival run.
Rishab, who is currently in the midst of finishing up the Kantara prequel, which will be in theatres on October 2, 2025, as has been reiterated by production house Hombale Films recently, handed over production credits of Vagachipani to Anurag Kashyap, as he’s been unable to devote time and energy for the film’s publicity and release.
