The big Kannada release over the Christmas holiday is Century Star Shivarajkumar’s milestone 125th film, Vedha. The film is his first home production, and his fourth collaboration with choreographer-director Harsha and comes just over a year after their last movie together, Bhajarangi 2. Expectations are sky high, even though Harsha has revealed precious little about the film or the characters, other than the fact that it is set in the 60s and will be quite violent.

The first teaser provided a glimpse into the weapons of Vedha and that there’s bound to be a fair share of bloodshed. What was interesting, though, is that most of the weapons are being wielded by the women of Vedha, whether it is Ganavi Laxman, Shwetha Changappa or Aditi Sagar. Shivarajkumar is paired with Ganavi, while Shwetha’s character appears to be a commercial sex worker. Social media discussions about the film point to it being about women’s rights and empowerment, even though it was also said that the look and feel of the teaser was very similar to Dhanush’s Asuran. Also, although Shivarajkumar was widely seen in an older avatar, he has multiple looks in the film.

The second teaser was Soul of Vedha, which was intriguing, but still did not shed light on what the film could be about. It did seem that the film revolves around Aditi’s character, with Shivarajkumar filling in as her protector.

The film is now set to release in theatres on December 23, in Kannada, Tamil and Telugu, and the team, it seems is going all out with it. In fact, Vedha is opening like most big-ticket films with early morning shows, with Bengaluru getting multiple screenings as early as 5 am. Advance booking for these shows has opened and they are either sold out or fast filling.

Vedha, produced by Geetha Shivarajkumar for Geetha Pictures, has music by Arjun Janya and cinematography by Swamy J. The cast also includes Umashree, Veena Ponnappa, Raghu Shivamogga, Bharat Sagar, Cheluvaraj, among others.
