Directed by P.S. Vinothraj, Koozhangal is India’s official entry for the Academy Awards

Shoojit Sircar’s Sardar Udham and P S Vinothraj’s Koozhangal are two movies that have been in the news recently. Both these highly acclaimed movies were shortlisted for India’s official entry for the Oscars, and the latter went on to be the winner.
Following this, fans were vocal accusing the Jury of getting the decision wrong, and that Sardar Udham should be the movie going for the competition.
Sircar has however opened up about the decision and what he feels about it. Talking to Times of India, the filmmaker said he does not think there is any controversy with the decision and that the jury and the head of the jury, Shaji N Karun made the right decision.
Sircar also said, “They were all responsible, creative members and it’s a huge task to select the right film for the Oscars, so, I think they have selected the right film. I have very strong hopes for Koozhangal”.
Koozhangal is a Tamil drama which also marks the debut directorial of Vinothraj is presented by Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan under the Rowdy Pictures banner.
The movie was showcased at the 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam, and is set to screen at the 52nd International Film Festival of India in the Indian Panorama section.

Sardar Udham is a historical drama based on the life of Udham Singh, the freedom fighter who assassinated Michael O'Dwyer, responsible for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The movie is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
