After playing Byomkesh and Feluda, Abir Chatterjee is all set to play yet another iconic detective character, Deepak Chatterjee. The trailer of Shri Swapankumarer Badami Hyenar Kobole – an ambitious project by Debaloy Bhattacharya – is startling and magical at the same time. The two-and-half-minute-long trailer captures the magic and the nostalgia of a series of pulp fiction that set the Bengali literature scene on fire in the ’50s.

Deepak Chatterjee is far from the detectives Abir plays or we are used to watching in Bengali films. Bengali writer Samarendranath Pandey created the magic of Deepak Chatterjee under the pen name of Swapan Kumar. The books became an instant hit and Deepak Chatterjee became a cult character in fiction writing. The teaser of Debaloy’s film hinted at a magical interaction between the character Deepak Chatterjee (played by Abir Chatterjee) and the writer Swapan Kumar (Paran Bandyopadhyay). In the trailer, their interaction flourishes, addressing all the elements of this iconic popular culture.

At the outset, the trailer captures the essence of pulp fiction through and through. Every bit of the moving images is laden with pop-art-like themes with fascinating colour palettes. The trailer – part melancholy and part arrogant – takes a dig at culture-snob Bengalis who conveniently let Swapan Kumar and his creation go to oblivion. The dialogue, music, action, and characters are a crazy rampwalk of pulp fiction.

Throughout the trailer, the Deepak Chatterjee – the fictional character – interacts with the writer, Swapan Kumar. The detective is asked to save the city from Badami Hayna and he argues that the city doesn’t need a character like him anymore. The writer reminds him that his creation is loved not for its logic but for its magic. The trailer, like the teaser, is breathtaking. It will be worth the wait to see if the film brings the magic that the trailer promises.

The film also features Chhotolok-fame Pratik Dutta and Shruti Das in key roles, amongst others. Produced by Hoichoi Studios, the film will release on January 12.
